This was supposed to be a high mileage week, but life got in the way. After 50 years at one location, my office moved across the street to the Towers. I had spent 22½ years of my work life in that building, but I am excited about the move – change is kind of exciting, and the new place is a significant level-up in every area. Anyway, with both my schedule turned a bit upside down and being exhausted from the move, I ended up having a low mileage week with no long run.

The week started off uneventfully as I was on Day 2 of no running due to a slight calf strain. I went ahead and took two more days off before resuming Mountains2Beach Half Marathon Training!

So The Plan was to complete two more weeks of training and then one week of taper, entering into Surf City on Super Bowl Sunday. That was The Plan anyway. Here’s what actually happened from my training notes.

Between the leg strengthening, the mileage, and the one-hour plus of aqua jogging to supplement my mileage, my legs are like “Why tho? What did we do to you?!?” Ha.These are my weekly miles in the last 6 weeks: 11, 6, 19, 27, 31, and 34. My long run in those 6 weeks went from 3.5, 3, 4 to 12, 13, and 14. Yikes.
Phase 2 begins…now!

My strategy in this six week accelerated training cycle is to ramp up mileage for three weeks and then focus on speed for three weeks. That will give me the week of the race to rest, and then we go! Do not try this at home, kids. I am honestly just winging it. Here’s the summary of the last two weeks of Operation Hurry Up and Get the Mileage Up!

Do not try this at home. I broke one of the major rules of training for a race and jacked up my miles too much. An ideal training cycle would have me increasing my weekly mileage at a reasonable pace — no more than 10% a week. But my pedestrian math calculations made me realize I have six weeks to get into shape for the Surf City Half Marathon. Not a big deal if I had been maintaining some running fitness, but I had basically taken three out of the last four weeks off from running. Basically, I am panicking. Ha. Anyway, here’s how the week went.

First week back from vacation, and I came back with stale legs and a little baguette pooch. Part of me couldn’t wait to get back to training, and the other dreaded. Here’s how it went.

Week 3 post-Santa Clarita Half Marathon, and Week 3 of No Plan. It went from 0 miles and 0 workouts (Week 1) to some 3-milers (Week 2) and then 25 miles last week (Week 3). I got worried about losing running fitness and endurance since I’ll be traveling for 11 days later this week. Here’s how my week back to full-time training went.

Santa Clarita was my last race of the year, so with the natural reverse taper and the end of the year at hand, it seems a good time to set out the game plan for 2020. Here’s the very fluid plan for the closing weeks of 2019, my tentative race schedule for 2020, and my goals for next year.

7 and 8.
How many complete rest days I took — not even yoga! — and how many running days I took off. Trainer prescribed, and I didn’t argue too much ‘cuz I needed the mental and physical break. But listen, by Sunday night I had had it! I bargained with Trainer to be able to do short runs. He relented (awww). Here’s how the week went.
