Decade of Friendships Started Via Social Media

This past weekend I took my buddy and board member out to lunch to thank him for helping me with the scholarship selection process. Thanks to social media, I’ve been able to connect with some awesome people who I would not normally be in spaces with – and Wells is one of them.

In 2013 I won Call of the Day on ESPN 710 – the Max (Kellerman) & Marcellus (Wiley) show. Then on my second call, the hosts wanted to know what I looked like because women don’t usually call into sports shows, and I was funny and smart. I gave them my Twitter name and soon after I gained a couple hundred followers in the ESPN demographic of men aged 25-45. Ha. Wells and I interacted a little over Twitter, so when he tweeted one night that he was at the Lakers game that I was at, I was like “Hey, I’m in Loge Section ____.” He turned out to be one of the coolest dudes I have ever met.

I won a gift certificate to Langer’s Deli.

Over the years, we have run into each other randomly at Staples and the Drew League, as well as followed each other over Twitter and IG. For some reason I was inspired to approach him about serving on the board for my scholarship foundation, and well, get this. Turns out he had already served on the Tom Bradley Scholarship committee that has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships to the children of City employees. IKR. His experience has been invaluable.

Who knew a “follow” would turn into this, but pretty dope I think.
