My first official training week with mileage. It was hard. Or, I guess I have not really been used to pushing myself in a while on my regular runs. The mileage was a bit more than I’m used to, and the intensity…Here’s how it went.
Mile repeats! Goal was to do 4x 1 mile at 10K race pace (8:10) with 3-minute jog in between. My times were 8:06-8:06-8:11-8:07. Tried to visualize this being a comfortable race pace for me which it did feel like — until that last rep. Def. had to dig deep for the last half mile. Then I did an hour of upper body with Trainer…Because I hate myself. Ha.
This morning I started the (track) base building phase with my coach. It was a Back-to-Basics and conditioning workout…and it was awful. I had been dreading it since the day before, and it did not disappoint! When the strides got hard, I focused on my form – lifting my legs and keeping my wonky left arm in tighter. In between reps I thought about Tom Brady who is turning 42 and starting his 20th season in the NFL. Why is he doing this? What is driving him? He already has all the rings and is universally known as the GOAT. Anyway, I figured if that dude was still out there, then this soon-to-be 52-year old lady could be out there at 7:00 a.m. before a full workday to get this work in. Here’s the workout:
4-5-6-7 x 100 yard strides (goal line to goal line) with 100 yard walk in between (all at 80%)
5 sets of stairs
8 x 100 yard strides
A proper long run for the first week of the training cycle. I had forgotten what it felt like to do a run where my legs felt fatigued and I had to take in fuel; I even felt that twingy/crampy feeling in one of my calves since it was so hot and I had been out there a bit. When I started to tire at the end, and I could see my pace starting to fall off, I wanted to stop, but I have been trying to focus on the purpose of each training run, and the purpose of this run wasn’t speed, but endurance – just getting my legs used to being out there for a second. So I kept going and it turns out my pace wasn’t too far off. My goal pace for the run was 8:42, and I hit it on the nose! I have a LOT of work to get back to a PR speed, but this week was a decent start!
Total Miles: 23
Long Run: 9 miles
