Stevie Wonder Isn’t Blind

The song that brought me in on my run the other day was “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” by Stevie Wonder. It’s a happy, upbeat song and, until recently, it made me think of the Obamas dancing at the inaugural ball. Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Will.I.Am, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Shakira, Faith Hill, Sting, and Stevie all sang it together.

An awesome moment and a fantastic way to end my run.

So yeah, that’s what I used to think about when I heard that song, but a few months ago, one of my favorite Twitter follows (and someone firmly placed on my Freebie Five), Bomani Jones, tweeted an article entitled “Stevie Wonder Is Not Blind: The Truthers’ Case” and proceeded to tweet why he thought it was valid to call into question Stevie’s blindness. Damn, family. I started reading the article for sh-ts and giggles, but by the end, I was like “maybe…” I mean, not only is this theory A Real Thing that’s apparently been going on for a while, there’s also a couple of good clips in the article that’s used for evidence. The Paul McCartney/mic-stand catch is the most compelling one for me. Add to that the fact that Bomani is kind of a cynical dude (and holds undergrad and grad degrees in economics – y’know, not a flighty guy), so his support of this idea carried some weight for me.

Regardless of the veracity of Stevie’s blindness, it’s interesting to note how important certain ideas have to be true, so we’ll feel OK. I mean, just in this post alone, not only is the whole univerise called into question if Stevie Wonder isn’t blind, what if the Obamas aren’t happily married?! That would f-cking destroy me.

In the end, I thought, “Well, what if Stevie Wonder isn’t blind? So what?” Ultimately, isn’t that a good thing? If you’re a fan of Stevie Wonder, wouldn’t you want that for him? Otherwise, aren’t you kind of being selfish? So now whenever that song comes up on my iPod, not only do I see the Obamas dancing all low-key cool, but I also think about how great it would be if Stevie Wonder really could see.

Anyway, decide for yourself.
